Marion Correctional Institution is located in McDowell County North Carolina. It is a close custody facility that has a minimum security unit operating on the same grounds. Close custody facilities operate at a high security level and inmates have higher restrictions then at a medium security institution. All inmates can take courses to earn a GED and obtain an adult basic education. Furthermore, offenders can receive vocational training through McDowell Technical Community College teaching the inmates skills in horticulture, cabinet making and industrial sewing. Other courses are available to inmates that help to modify behavior including "thinking for a change" and "character education". Marion Correctional Institution's minimum security unit are allowed to participate in parenting classes, and are even allowed to work jobs off of correctional grounds on road crews cleaning up roadways, and through the work release program. The work release program allows select minimum custody inmates to leave the correctional facility during the day to report to a job in the surrounding community, then return to the institution at the end of their shift. Additional jobs are available to inmates within the institution and include working in facility maintenance, in food services, and in custodial work
